The Syracuse University Ancient Fife & Drum Corps was established in the fall of 2004 by Michael W. Bull, Head of Percussion at Syracuse University. The term “Ancient” refers to a style playing and is not necessarily directly tied to any specific period of time or music, but incorporates many different styles/music written and arranged for Fifes & Drums. The SU Corps performs music from the early days of fife & drums from the 1700’s to more “modern” fife & drum music of the 20th century. The uniforms of the Corps are Syracuse Orange and Blue with tricorn hats and designed in a colonial style. The purpose of the Corps is traditional, in that it is a concert/ceremonial performing group, hoping to keep alive the rich historical tradition of the Fife & Drum. We also perform educational concerts and, like drummers everywhere, we play because it is fun! The Syracuse University Ancient Fife & Drum Corps performs on period replica instruments made by the Cooperman Fife & Drum Company.
The Corps has performed as soloists with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in May 2007 and also led Chief Justice John Roberts to the dedication ceremony from Hendricks Chapel to Newhouse III on the SU campus. The Corps also performs educational concerts in the Central New York area and regularly with the SU Percussion Ensemble in Setnor Auditorium.
