Welcome SUMB Drumline and auditioners,
Enclosed with this letter is a list of each section’s audition requirements, an exercise packet, the Percussive Arts Society International Drum Rudiments, and several cadences.
Auditions begin at 1:30pm inside the equipment room of the Carrier Dome on Friday, August 20th. See the Audition Packet for the specifics of each instrument. Cadence excerpts, exercises, and rudiments are to be MEMORIZED. No exceptions!
All of the required exercises should be played at soft, medium, and loud dynamics and at slow, medium, and fast tempos on your respective instrument. Mark time, left foot lead, to all exercises except for Eights and 3-5-7. Pay particular attention to the timing of the hands and feet as you mark time.
Each rudiment should take 30-45 seconds to complete and should be played in the following manner:
- Start very slow
- Gradually speed up to your fastest tempo
- Hold for 5 to 8 seconds
- Gradually slow down to your original tempo
All of the other cadences, including Down the Field, the rest of Street Time 99, the rest of Double Beat 2004 and Pre-game are for your reference only and will NOT be a part of the audition.
Enter at the Stadium Control entrance in the southwest corner of the Carrier Dome. Bring your practice pads, sticks/mallets, metronome, 3-ring binder with plenty of plastic sleeves, and a pencil. Come prepared and ready to drum.
Please email me with any questions at jadekane@syr.edu.
I look forward to meeting you,
