Marching Band - Parent's Page and FAQ
Frequently
Asked Questions:
There
are many tough decisions that a high school senior has to make.
Some of the biggest ones involve what school to attend and what
to study. Another important decision is whether or not to continue
being involved in music in college by participating in bands and
especially in marching band. Here are some of the questions most
asked by parents like you when their son or daughter was considering
joining the “Pride of the Orange.”
Q: Do students have to be a music major to play in the
bands?
A: Not at all! Over 90% of marching band members are in a major
other than music.
Q: How much time does band require?
A: There will be three two-hour rehearsals on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Thursdays (7:00-9:00pm) during weeks when there are no games.
A Friday evening and Saturday morning rehearsal will be added
for game weeks.
Q: Will my son/daughter’s grades suffer because
of marching band?
A: NO! In fact, the grade point averages of marching band students
are higher than the overall university averages. Band members’
GPAs are often higher in the fall semester than they are in the
spring when the band no longer meets.
Q: My son/daughter has a tough major. Will there be time
for marching?
A: If a student wants to be in the band, there is time! Someone
in the band already has the same major as your son/daughter and
can provide peer information to help.
Q: If my son/daughter doesn’t get involved with
the band program the first year, can they still participate later
on?
A: Of course! Just make sure we keep you on our mailing list and
we will keep you updated of all information.
Q: Will I be able to spend time with my son/daughter during
band camp?
A: No, once our students arrive, they will be rehearsing throughout
each day of camp.
Q: Do we need to buy season tickets to football games
for our son/daughter?
A: No, as a member of the marching band, he/she will not need
tickets to the football games. Just to let you know, the Band
Dept. does not have access to game tickets, if you’d like
to buy them for yourselves, please contact the Carrier Dome Ticket
Office.
