Professor Justin Jay Mertz is the Assistant Director of Bands and Director of the Syracuse University Marching Band. He is the Assistant Conductor of the Wind Ensemble and co-conductor of the Symphony Band. A native of Massapequa, New York, he has held teaching positions in the Alief Independent School District in Houston, Texas, and the Westmoreland Central School District in Westmoreland, New York. At Westmoreland Middle School, he was named Faculty of the Year in 2004. The Pride of Westmoreland Marching Band finished near the top of its class under his direction. Additionally, he has been a guest conductor and clinician all over New York State, including the Greater Utica Honors Youth Wind Ensemble, Oxford Summer Band Camp and NYSSMA area all-state festivals. He holds two degrees from Syracuse University.
